Something I read on Henry Rollins' blog reminded me of similar things I experienced on a little too many less-than-memorable flights...

At one point, the woman sitting across the aisle from me looked in my direction and proceeded to sneeze an incredible amount of her accumulated nasal storage all over the right side of my face, shoulder and arm. The trajectory was only outdone by the velocity of the particles. I just sat there with the sheen of whatever was in that woman’s nose and stared at her. She went back to whatever she was doing before she decided to coat me with her natural resin. I said to her, “That was disgusting.” She just looked at me and went back to staring at the screen in front of her. Was this our first date?

It's cracking and peeling off all over the cable. I've seen this happen at the tips of other cables (like iPod USB cables and MacBook powerbrick cables), and it usually happens where the cable enters the plug, and understandably so becuase that's where most of the stress is when incorrectly coiling the cable, but I keep this one mostly in a drawer, uncoiled. The white plastic is cracking along the length of the cable and peeling off very easily. Weird.

في عدد الاهرام الصادر الاثنين 19 يوليو  2010, كَتب محمود حامد الشريف مقال بعنوان "في الترجمة واللغة الوطنية, معلقا على الاستخدام الاعمي لمصطلحات ترجمت حرفيا مع عدم النظر إلى السياق اللغوي للمعني بهدف الوصول إلى أصح ترجمة للمعني الحقيقي في العربية. ذكر الأستاذ محمود بعض الامثلة لهذا الغباء الأدبي , كترجمة مصطلح Marriage institution إلى مؤسسة الزواج في حين ان الترجمة غير الحرفية الصحيحة هي سنة الزواج.

الكلام ده فكرني بمصطلح كل ماشوفه في الجرايد أو المواقع العربية أصاب بحالة من القرف الشديد من المترجم الغبي  اللي عمل هذه الافتكاسة اللغوية العظيمة. هذا المصطلح هو: الشبكة العنكبوتية...

إيه هي الشبكة العنكبوتية؟ طبعا المصطلح ده بقى يستخدم في كل حاجة تكتب عن ما كان يعرف ب"شبكة المعلومات الدولية “ أو “الإنترنت". طبعا هو مش ترجمة لمصطلح Internet , بل هي  محاولة غبية لترجمة مصطلح The Web  , الذي يختلف في  تعريفه عن الإنترنت , ولكن هذا لا يمنع ان “الشبكة العنكبوتية" هي ترجمة  شديدة السخافة. كل ما أسمع الشبكة العنكبوتية كل  اللي اقدر أفكر فيه هو مشاهد عديدة من أفلام الخيال العلمي شاكلة The Matrix   واحاول اتخيل شكل الشبكة العنكبوتية المهولة والوحوش التي تجوبها.

بلاش غباء بقى وسيبوكوا من موضوع العناكب ده. ممكن نقول “شبكة المعلومات" أو أي حاجة تانية ما فيهاش حشرات.

Blurry phone picture, but this taxi had THREE liscence plates: one UAE plate on the bottom left corner of the rear bumper, one Egyptian plate and a an EU plate right below it.

Just in case he had to go across borders on a short notice.

...or maybe he's a collector?
